Takeaways 11/24/15
Looking at the different strategies for vocabulary really peaks my interest. I teach a Vet Science class next year and a Advanced Livestock class this year. There is a lot of terms that students do not always understand. I think that the vocabulary box can be great to the Vet Science terms since the terms will build off of each other and the root words are very important. I like the figure on page 161, which explains how readers go about figuring out unknown words. I have noticed this with students in my Advanced Livestock class, we have been doing article reviews every week and students have trouble with some words and they are using these techniques to help them in the context of the articles.

Vocabulary is key. That is why DESE really hounds us to evaluate the use of content vocabulary in teacher evaluation. I am glad to hear that you are finding some reading strategies that might help you in class!
ReplyDeleteKnowing the meaning of words is so important. You can't stress that enough to the students. I really liked the figure used in the book on the CSSR strategy, as well. It's a great way of explaining it.
