Final Post

This has been a crazy fast pace last few weeks.   I to like most of us are glad it is over and Christmas is here.  This class has opened my eyes to a lot of new things.  At first I really did not understand how this class would work in to agriculture, but through the last few weeks I see how I can use some of these techniques in class.  I think with these strategies I can get more out of my classes, especially getting students to put information into long term memory, hopefully.  I have enjoyed the conversations and the information that I have learned.

Takeaways 12/2/15

This was really helpful for my lesson plans this week.  I really liked the TPRC exercise we did and I can use this with my different agricultural classes early on when evaluating students previous knowledge.  I really liked the is of VSS and having them help with vocabulary.  I believe this will give them some ownership and I can also use that as chance to see which words they actually know.  I also so like the response I have gotten from using the KWL chart in class.  Has given me insight again on their previous knowledge and what they are actually retaining.  The times that I have used the chart seems to have them focus more on the reading when they know that they are filling the KWL chart out.  Really enjoyed this weeks lesson.

Takeaways 11/24/15

Looking at the different strategies for vocabulary really peaks my interest.  I teach a Vet Science class next year and a Advanced Livestock class this year.  There is a lot of terms that students do not always understand.  I think that the vocabulary box can be great to the Vet Science terms since the terms will build off of each other and the root words are very important.  I like the figure on page 161, which explains how readers go about figuring out unknown words.  I have noticed this with students in my Advanced Livestock class, we have been doing article reviews every week and students have trouble with some words and they are using these techniques to help them in the context of the articles.

Takeaways 11/18/15

Talking about the different strategies helped me to keep them straight.  I will say that sometimes with these lesson plans it can be overwhelming, but I see where it would have been very beneficial if I would have known this before I started teaching.  In learning these different techniques it has been very interesting and I have even tried a couple on my student within the last couple of weeks.  The one that seemed to be the most beneficial was a KWL Chart that actually made them think and spend some time reflecting on their past information that they might have learned.  I think with the KWL Chart and vocabulary front-loading has been the most beneficial.

Lesson Plan

Here is an example of a lesson plan from my Ag Econ/ Marketing class.

See if this will work, please let me know if not.

Take Aways

I really enjoyed last weeks exercise and found it to be very enlightening.  With people looking at things differently and how each person explained it was eye opening.  It would have been interesting to see peoples faces as the explanation was going on.  You could hear in their voices some uncertainty about their explanation as everyone else was talking about their view point.  It makes me think about how each student I have in class sees things differently than the next or even from myself.  I again have to realize that not all of them have learned the same material and times have changes.  I no longer can believe that they are ready for me to pour information in, I realize that they all bring their own information on topics to class whether right or wrong.  Enjoyed the exercise!
